PEACE POCKET IS A PRIVATE RESIDENCE. VISITATION BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
Architect Henry Howard designed four brick cottages on this quiet cul-de-sac, using elements from estates that were torn down. The last was this painter’s studio, completed in 1945. Present owner Constance Metcalf has dedicated Peace Pocket to increase biodiversity and to sustain wildlife by planting ground covers rather than turf grass, by including native species, and by conserving rainwater in an underground cistern for all plantings. This emerging landscape was first planted in 2016; in 2017, collaboration began with the Newport Arboretum to enhance the collection.
Peace Pocket also hosts The Newport Arboretum’s newest satellite nursery. Prior to establishing the nursery, the arboreta collaborated on soil testing throughout the grounds of Peace Pocket, and soil amendments are being made with compost generated on site. This satellite nursery is currently growing six specimen trees including: Golden Incense Cedar, Lady Sunshine Dovetree, Doug Field Larch, Chinese Pistache, Variegated Sweetgum, and Sweetgum ‘Rotundifolia’.
