Arboretum Accreditation

How do I become an accredited arboretum?

The Arbnet Arboretum Accreditation Program recognizes arboreta worldwide who have met specific standards of professional practice in the field. Level I accreditation requires 25 or more species or cultivars of trees and woody plants, an arboretum steering committee, and a public element that includes at least one public event per year.

The Newport Arboretum welcomes private property owners to join the growing ranks of professionally recognized Newport arboreta, and can help you in your application process. The Newport Arboretum Living Collections Committee is available to act as your steering committee (requiring a biannual check-in to make sure you continue to meet the requirements to be recognized by Arbnet as an arboretum). In addition, participating properties can join our family of arboreta in opening their doors for a public tour during Newport Arboretum Week or other times of the year. We encourage you to take advantage of the resources available through your citywide arboretum, including such help as tree i.d. and surveying, and arboretum tree tags.
