The Newport Arboretum Grow House at Rogers High School is open for business.

Llamar questioned the facts on extinction, and what we can and should be doing about it. Jy (who was already woke about mass extinction) produced an intricate botanical drawing of the bloom of his Pyrus pashia, the wild Himalayan pear. Nijah fell in love with her tree, Salix matsudana, or Corkscrew Willow; she is certain its fabulously artistic contorted branches are going to put all other trees to shame. Cortez was incensed when he found out another seedling in the room was predicted to grow even taller than his Tsuga chinensis. He claimed foul play. We couldn’t argue with his logic.

All in all, it was a lively afternoon for The Newport Project and the Newport Tree Society staff, who introduced the class to the 50+ species of trees wintering inside the Newport Arboretum Grow House at Rogers High School.

Next week, the students will begin their work with the Heritage Tree Program, an effort to preserve the genetic lines of Newport’s most at-risk heritage trees. We can’t wait.
